Not sure where to live while stationed at Quantico? Check out these insider tips:

My husband was stationed at MCB Quantico last year for The Basic School, otherwise known as TBS. This was our first move with the military, so we made a few mistakes that I hope others can learn from. First, we didn't understand that MCB Quantico was split into two sides: main side and "not main side." We'd been advised to live somewhere convenient to the main side. Unfortunately, his training was located on the far area of “not main side,” which meant a commute of 30 minutes from our home.

Living near the main side: The gym, the exchange, the commissary and community activities are all located on the main side. There is also base housing in this area. Several of my friends lived very comfortably in the housing located just inside the main gate by the golf course. If the military member's new assignment is located on main side, this is about as close as you can get to work.

Triangle and Dumfries: With just a couple minutes' commute, Triangle provides the closest civilian housing to the main side of base. There are several pleasant neighborhoods just off base. Dumfries is generally considered nicer, but slightly further from base than Triangle.

Stafford: Stafford is about 10 minutes from the back entrance to main side and about a minute to the south entrance of “not main side,” which conveniently leads to Camp Barrett, the location of The Basic School. Stafford is very much a military town. It has a Target, Walmart, Panera and several wonderful local shops. One disadvantage of living in Stafford is the morning commute if you're driving before 9 a.m. to the main side. You may also feel a lack of separation between work and home since many military live in Stafford. Although the highway was updated last year, you will fight with morning traffic headed to D.C.

Woodbridge and Montclair: Woodbridge is located north of main side, just a few miles north of the main entrance. Opposite of Stafford, your morning commute regardless of whether you are going to main side or “not main side” will have you driving against traffic. I personally enjoyed living in Woodbridge because it is bigger and does not feel like a military town. There's an outlet mall and an endless number of restaurants. We enjoyed having a separation between work and home. However, if we had to do those nine months over again, we would probably choose to live closer to his work.
