Things to Do All Year-Round Near Maxwell AFB

Moving to Maxwell AFB, Alabama? You’ll find something to do all year-round! In addition to the iconic and must-see civil rights memorials and museums, the Montgomery area features a variety of things to do even on the hottest or rainiest of days.

Get Outside

Families enjoy u-pick farms like Sugar Hill, festivals such as the Penton Farms Pumpkin Festival, outdoor concerts played by the Montgomery Symphony, and the annual Alabama National Fair each October. The fair has been around since 1854 and draws local attendees along with others traveling from neighboring and even distant states.

Can’t get your fill of our national pastime? Montgomery has its own minor league baseball team, the Montgomery Biscuits. If you’d prefer football, catch a game with the Prattville Patriots who are affiliated with the Amateur to Professional Developmental Football League.

Indoor Activities

Both Troy University’s David Theater and the Montgomery Performing Arts Center host cultural events. Stargazers will enjoy a trip to the W.A. Gayle Planetarium at Troy University. For a different outing and a break from the heat, Wind Creek Casino Hotel hosts gamblers, diners, and people watchers in Wetumpka. 

Sample the Local Cuisine

Southern cooking is alive and well near Maxwell AFB, and you’ll have your pick in the Montgomery area. Some local favorites include Mrs. B’s Home Cooking, Eastbrook Cafe, and Martin’s Restaurant. Get your fill of sweet tea, fried chicken, pork, sweet potatoes, greens, and mashed potatoes, as these delicious foods grace most family-style restaurant menus and buffets. 

You’ll also find fine dining in Montgomery. Customer favorites include Central, Vintage Year, and City Grill. Locals also recommend Autauga Creek Crafthouse and Ellianos Coffee.

Maxwell is situated ideally for day and overnight trips to dozens of tourist favorites such as Atlanta, Georgia, or Birmingham. Each destination offers its own amenities, from sporting events to family adventure parks.
